A wireless mesh network (WMN) is a communications network made up of radio nodes organized using Mesh topology. Wireless Mesh Networks often consist of mesh clients like laptops, cell phones and other wireless device, Mesh Routers and Gateways. The coverage area of the radio nodes which work as a single network is sometimes called a mesh cloud. This mesh cloud is dependent on the radio nodes which work in harmony with each other to create a radio network.
A mesh network is easily reliable and offers redundancy. If one of the nodes can no longer operate, the rest of the nodes can still communicate with each other, directly or through one or more intermediate nodes.
A wireless mesh network is a special type of wireless ad-hoc network. This network often has more planned configuration. It can be deployed to get dynamic and cost effective connectivity over a various geographic area.
The mesh routers are like mobiles, which can be moved according to specific needs arising in the network. The mesh routers can be exploited in order to perform more intensive resource functions. This makes the difference between the wireless Mesh Networks from an ad-hoc network, as these nodes are often constrained by resources.
